Bob Hope and Jimmy Lyons
State Docks and Maritime Specialists
Bob Hope, not to be confused with the TV and film star, became director of the Alabama State Docks in 1952 and is credited with helping make the port one of the top bulk handling facilities in the country. In the ’70s and ’80s, Hope pushed modernization of bauxite import facilities and McDuffie Terminal’s coal export facility. Various reports cited growth from an initial capacity of 1.5 million tons per year to nearly 30 million tons per year.
Jimmy Lyons, the present chief executive of the Alabama State Port Authority, has carried out that mission with distinction. Previously, he was owner of Trinity Marine and Transportation Consulting and worked 20 years with Ryan-Walsh Inc.
