Event Details

The annual Point-in-Time (PIT) Count of the homeless in Mobile and Baldwin counties will be on Wednesday, January 23, 2019. This is a mandatory count of all men, women and children who are homeless in our immediate area. This national event is conducted throughout urban and rural communities on a single day during the last ten days of each January. The data collected from the local count is used to provide a picture of homelessness in Mobile and Baldwin counties, in order to evaluate gaps in housing and services, and to guide community plans on ending homelessness. The data is also used to apply for federal grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and drive new and continued funding sources for affordable housing and homeless services in our community.

Street teams of volunteers canvas geographical areas in Mobile and Baldwin counties to count and interview homeless citizens found in those areas. Locations usually include the streets, under bridges, and encampments in wooded areas. The PIT Count also focuses on sheltered homeless individuals and families residing in emergency shelters, transitional housing projects, or hospitals.

If you would like to volunteer, please go to www.hfal.org to complete the Volunteer Registration Form. If you would like to donate supplies to the 2019 PIT Count, please contact Sharon Algood of Housing First at (251) 445-8016 or at [email protected].
