Rolling into Bayou La Batre and shaking off the dust of the highway, you can breathe the salty sea air from the banks of Murder Point Oysters. Spent shells crunch under the weight of the wheels and the oyster farmers, chest deep in winter water, can be seen in the distance, raising up baskets from the Gulf and examining their contents before lowering them  beneath the surface. The labor of love that has earned Lane Zirlott and his team renown far beyond these waters and in just a few weeks California-based, roving dinner troupe, Outstanding in the Field, will visit to taste the prized bivalves at their source.

Founded by renowned land artist Jim Denevan in 1999 to connect people to the land and the origins of their food, long before most Americans had heard the phrase “farm-to-table,”Outstanding in the Field dinners have achieved global cult status. Their iconic communal table has been set throughout the US and in 25 countries, and continues to expand internationally. More than 700 of the world’s most notable and award-winning chefs have accepted the challenge of helming the field kitchen, and  Arwen Rice,   the James-Beard nominated chef of beloved local institution Red or White, is eager to take her place in that long line.

The long white dinner tables have been set atop the crest of hills, beneath orchards and along sandy shores in crescent moon bays. Meals are often served on the farm from which the meats, fish and produce originate, giving the diner an opportunity to connect with the farmers and producers in a profound way. Everything is served family-style, and those attending leave at the end of the night with a feeling of contentment and a slew of new friends made over oysters and sparkling wine, pasta and pastry.

Rice’s menu will of course feature succulent Murder Point oysters, steaming hot on the grill, in addition to smoked snapper mouse with fish from Fairhope Fish House, grilled pork from Circle E Farm and a citrusy winter salad with ingredients from Local Appetite growers, all based in Mobile and Baldwin Counties, among several other courses.
