On September 12, 2026, the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf will open the Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience, an all-new immersive celebration of the life and legacy of Jimmy Buffett. Long before the flip-flops and sold-out shows, Buffett had roots right here in Mobile.
Now, fans will have a new opportunity to experience that story and discover more about the city that helped shape the man behind the music.
Step Into the World of Jimmy Buffett
This isn’t a typical museum exhibit. Spanning 6,000 square feet and two floors of the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf, the Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience brings Buffett’s story to life through more than 250 artifacts and photographs, never-before-seen footage, interactive displays and personal stories from the friends and family who knew him best.
The experience reaches back to Buffett’s earliest days, including his family’s move to the Mobile area when he was just 18 months old. For those who call the Gulf Coast home, the exhibit offers a chance to see a familiar place through a different lens and discover how Mobile and the surrounding coast helped influence an artist whose music would eventually become synonymous with escaping the everyday and embracing life at a slower pace.
The experience officially opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, but in true Mobile fashion, the celebration extends well beyond (and before) the museum doors.
Make a Weekend of It
Opening weekend kicks off Friday night, September 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Mobile’s historic Saenger Theatre, where Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Mac McAnally and acclaimed songwriter and performer Scotty Emerick will take the stage for Margaritas and Memories. As a longtime collaborator of Buffett’s, McAnally brings a personal connection to the music and stories Parrot Heads know by heart.
The weekend will also bring a new splash of color to downtown. The inaugural MobTown Mural Festival, happening September 11-12, will transform parts of the city into an open canvas as artists create murals in real time, including at waterfront Cooper Riverside Park.
Then, on Saturday morning September 12, the main event begins. The Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience opens its doors at 10 a.m., giving fans the opportunity to be among the first to explore the new exhibit. Opening weekend will also feature the unveiling of a larger-than-life bronze Jimmy Buffett sculpture created by artist Ben Victor, adding another lasting tribute to Buffett’s connection to the Gulf Coast.
Taste a Little Paradise
No Buffett celebration would be complete without a few memorable bites and a frozen concoction or two. On Saturdays from August 29 through September 19, Bienville Bites Food Tours will offer the Savor the Son of a Sailor Food Tour, a special experience created around the exhibit’s opening.
The tour combines Mobile’s food scene with stories from Buffett’s childhood, serving up seafood, fried chicken, frozen concoctions, a key lime treat and, naturally, a Cheeseburger in Paradise. Even for locals who know their way around Mobile’s food scene, the tour offers an opportunity to experience familiar flavors alongside stories about Buffett’s early years in the area.
Rediscover Mobile Through Buffett’s Story
For visitors traveling to Mobile for the exhibit, opening weekend offers plenty of reasons to turn the celebration into a full coastal getaway. For locals, opening weekend offers the perfect excuse to spend a little extra time downtown and experience the city from a different perspective.
The special events can easily become a full weekend close to home, with locally owned restaurants, historic streets, waterfront views, museums and favorite downtown stops all within easy reach of the celebration.
