Top 10 Things to Do in August

Aug. 1: Pelican Paddle Canoe and Kayak Race

Tonsmeire Weeks Bay Resource Center

7:30 a.m. registration, 9 a.m. race begins. Race along 3.5 miles in canoes, kayaks, standup paddle boards and unconventional craft, such as peddle-powered kayaks. For pros, there is a 7-mile course. If racing is not your speed, check out a guided eco-tour paddle. Entry fee is $30 for individuals and $60 for families (includes a T-shirt and hot dog lunch). Proceeds benefit the Weeks Bay Foundation.

Aug. 2,  9,  16: Summer Classic Movie Series

Saenger Theatre ​• 6 S Joachim St.​

3 p.m. Escape the sweltering heat at a classic Sunday matinee. This month’s lineup includes “Singing in the Rain, ” “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “The Wizard of Oz.” Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for kids and seniors.

Aug. 5: Paint Your Pooch Party

Alchemy Tavern • 7 S Joachim St. 

6 p.m. Create a custom portrait of your beloved dog or cat and give back to the local pet community all at the same time. Simply submit a picture of your pet to [email protected] by Aug. 2,  and the Paint the Town Mobile staff will get your canvas started for you and guide you in painting a portrait of your best friend. No painting experience is required! Cost is $25, and proceeds benefit Delta Dogs, a nonprofit organization that provides healthcare support and preventative medicine to the pets of Mobile's community in need.

Aug. 6: Roman Street & The Mulligan Brothers 

Saenger Theatre • ​6 S Joachim St.

7:30 p.m. Two local bands, one night of amazing music. Tickets range from $25 – $45. Before the show, learn more Roman Street and The Mulligan Brothers from our interviews with the bands.

Aug. 6: Glow in the Park Summer Movie Series 

Fairhopers Community Park

7:30 p.m. Round up the family for a night under the stars and a free screening of Disney Pixar's “A Bug's Life.” Lawn chairs and blankets are recommended.

Aug. 8: Sandstock

It's like Woodstock, with a beach twist. Good food, good music and good times all around. Hippie style clothing encouraged.

Aug. 13: Fashion Show 2015

The Venue • 105 S Section St., Fairhope

6 p.m. Presented by the Eastern Shore Exchange Club, this fashion show will feature items from Brown Eyed Girl, Kohl's, Chico's and Ann Taylor Loft. The event also includes a silent auction and a wine pull sponsored by Southern Napa. Tickets are $40, and proceeds benefit The Family Center. 

Aug. 22: Alabama Shakes

The Amphitheater at The Wharf • Orange Beach

8 p.m. Sing along to “Hang Loose” and “Hold On” at this outdoor summer concert. The Athens, Ala., band will be joined by special guests Drive-By Truckers. Tickets range from $45 – $70.

Aug. 28 – 29: Reel Hope Classic Fishing Tournament

Orange Beach Marina • 27075 Marina Road

4 p.m. – 8 p.m., weigh-in. Four-man teams can compete in categories including inshore fishing for $250 per boat and offshore fishing for $500 per boat. A jackpot category is also available for an additional $25 per boat. Individuals can register under the “Land Lubber” category to fish from the Gulf State Park Pier in Gulf Shores. The festivities will kick off on Friday with a Captain's Meeting and pre-party where participating crew members can bring one guest each to enjoy dinner, drinks, live music and a live auction. Proceeds benefit the Pediatric Cancer Clinic at Children’s of Alabama.

Aug. 29: Dauphin Street Beer Festival

Downtown Mobile

6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Work your way down Dauphin Street, sampling a variety of beers at participating restaurants and bars. From pale ales to darker brews, there's something on tap for everyone. Grab a mug and a map and drink to your heart's content. Tickets are $25.
