Restaurant Review: Old 27 Grill

William Stitt is counting on 27 to be his lucky number. His new restaurant, Old 27 Grill, is on old County Road 27 (now state Highway 181). It features 27 menu items, 27 hot dog toppings and 27 beer and wine selections.

“The whole 27 thing just kind of happened and has been a great conversation piece, so we held our grand opening on April 27, ” Stitt says.

He describes his venture as, “a local burger joint with breakfast options.” It is a fun, friendly, feel-good sort of place tucked away from the road and under the trees.

Customers can dine picnic-style outside, on the porch, or in casual, air-conditioned seating indoors. Stitt says his goal is simple. “I want to have a great local restaurant, where family and friends take the time to slow down a little, enjoy each other’s company and laugh more often.”

Juicy burgers and all-beef hot dogs — fixed any way you like them — are big sellers. The appropriately named Comeback Chicken Sandwich, below, is another popular pick. Quiche is a signature specialty from breakfast to closing — unless they sell out. Variations of the dish include sausage, mushroom and the “Jayme, ” a winning combo of chicken, green olives and tomatoes, created by manager Jayme Davis. For dessert, there is a trio of crepes to choose from — banana, strawberry or hot chocolate — and each is a sweet, sizable finale featuring soft-serve ice cream and lots of fresh whipped cream. You can also get a good, thick, old-fashioned milkshake, brownie a la mode or a banana split.

For breakfast, the restaurant offers sausage, steak, chicken, egg and cheese biscuits; French toast; several cereal selections; and homemade bran muffins. Also, find an ever-expanding store section stocked with local honey, vinegars, smoked tuna dip, goat cheese, wines and ice.
