May 2026: 4 Local Restaurant Dishes to Try

From the Grilled Salmon Salad at Southwood Kitchen to the Shrimp Po'boy at Catalina Restaurant, here’s what our food contributors are raving about this month.

Grilled Salmon Salad from Southwood Kitchen

Grilled Salmon Salad at Southwood Kitchen

“I’ve ordered a lot of salads in my life. Most are forgettable. But the grilled salmon salad at Southwood Kitchen is not. Grilled salmon sits on top of a spring mix with cucumber, tomato, goat cheese and sunflower seeds, all tossed in a lemon-caper vinaigrette that makes the whole thing sing. It’s fresh, satisfying and just indulgent enough to make you forget you ordered a salad in the first place. I’ve never had a bad meal at Southwood Kitchen. If you want to understand why locals love it, start here.” – Jennifer Jenkins, Founder and President, JJPR

Pho at Liti Pho Vietnamese Restaurant

“A lunch date with a friend turned into a new experience for me: trying pho. After having it at Liti Pho Vietnamese Restaurant, let me say this: I have officially found my new favorite comfort meal. I quickly realized why it’s a beloved dish. Mine consisted of bone broth, rice noodles, fresh herbs and meat. The flavors are so well-balanced and you can customize it to your liking. As a spice lover, I added chilli oil, sriracha sauce and jalapeños to add an extra kick. As long as their doors are open, I will be dining here.” – Victoria Finkley, Dance Educator, Sheffield School of the Dance and Danze 101 / Children’s Book Author

Shrimp Po’boy at Catalina Restaurant

“Every Forrest Gump fan knows that the best place to get shrimp is in Bayou La Batre. Catalina Restaurant is one of those restaurants that is family owned and has been around for what seems like forever, so you know they are doing something right. I enjoyed a classic shrimp po-boy and fries for lunch. This po-boy includes 10 – 12 good-sized and perfectly seasoned fried shrimp, fresh off the boat. Fully dressed with the classic lettuce, tomato and onions on warm bread, it’s no frills and just darn good.” – Grey O’Brien, Business Development, Employee Liability Management (ELM)

Green Tomato Crispy Crab Sandwich at The Pelican Reef

“It’s a scientific fact that a dockside view of the water has the ability to make seafood taste better and beer colder. This is one of the many reasons why enjoying the fried green tomato and softshell crab sandwich at The Pelican Reef in Fowl River Marina is a coastal favorite of mine. The sandwich is served on Texas toast with a spicy Creole remoulade sauce, which blends nicely with the fried crab and tomato. And you can’t beat the atmosphere.” – Stephen McNair, Director of Policy & Legislative Affairs, City of Mobile
