Restaurant Review: Miss D’s Restaurant & Lounge

If you’ve ever traveled to another country, you’ve probably sought out authentic restaurants and found that the spots most exemplifying the culture and cuisine are those no-frills, straightforward cafes filled with locals and void of hype.

For that kind of genuine experience right here in South Alabama, a trip to Miss D’s Restaurant & Lounge in Daphne will not leave you disappointed.

Complete with dark, wood-paneled walls, stained glass beer-logo lampshades and year-round Christmas lights adorning the bar, Miss D’s is the quintessential Southern bar and restaurant serving good, simple food. If that’s not enough, one of the waitresses will surely call you “sweetie, ” while Fox News buzzes on the flat screen in the background. Plus, the restaurant hosts karaoke on weekends.

The experience at Miss D’s is not fine dining – it’s fun dining. Establishments like this one bring us back to the rural South’s familiarity and come-as-you-are hospitality, where retired men meet for lunch to sip on domestic beers while solving the world’s problems and single diners grab a quick bite while catching up on the news.

Obviously, Miss D (named for Diane Gable, who still works in the kitchen, by the way) is doing something right in the tiny, modest building on 181; a large banner hanging in the dining area reads, “Celebrating 43 years in business.” Here’s to many more, Miss D!

ON THE MENU

Bacon Cheeseburger
This old-fashioned go-to, above, is one of those guilty pleasure burgers that just melts in your mouth. Served on a hot, toasted bun with mayo, mustard, American cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and onion, plus your choice of fries or onion rings alongside.

Fish Po’boy
One of the most popular items on the menu, this huge sandwich comes with fried fish, tartar sauce, lettuce and tomato on a toasted loaf.

Hamburger Steak
The juicy meat is topped with rich, tasty gravy and served with fresh salad and crisp fries.

Hot Chicken Wings
Spicy and flavorful chicken wings, offered with ranch for dipping, of course. For even more heat, add a side of crabmeat-stuffed jalapeños.
